Howey test

The 1946 SCOTUS framework determining whether an arrangement is an investment contract (and therefore a security under US law).

A four-prong test: investment of money, common enterprise, expectation of profits, derived from the efforts of others. Most stablecoin classifications turn on the fourth prong (purely-fiat-backed payment stablecoins arguably have no profit expectation; yield-bearing stables do).
